The May River Capital is a project that my friend and colleague Paul Smith and I started in 2015. As we learned more about the May River and the history of the area, this area was often referred to as ‘The Big Ditch’ by our first project volunteers. This project was aimed to build community, reduce flooding, and promote restoration of the May River.

The May River Capital is one step in the process of creating a river restoration district, a citywide river park that would house restoration projects like the May River Capital, riverwalk projects, and other types of restoration projects. The May River Capital is one of the first projects in this area, but Paul and I hope it will grow into a larger community of similar projects.

The May River is a major river in the city of Mayport. The May River restoration project is aimed at repairing the main river to its pre-flood condition. In the past the May River was a major flood source for the city, causing over $1.4 million in property damage in 2016 alone.

May River (or May River Road) is the main thoroughfare, and it’s a bridge over the Gaffney River. It’s a major bridge that spans the Gaffney River with its four tributaries on two sides.
